'Braceface' Wins Environmental Media Association Award |
Executive Producer/Lead Voice Talent Alicia Silverstone Accepts Honor |
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, Nov. 15 -/E-Wire/-- BRACEFACE "Meat Of The Matter" was awarded the Environmental Media Award for "Best Children's Animated Program" at the 11th annual Environmental Media Association's (EMA) Awards ceremony on November 7. BRACEFACE, which is produced by Corus Entertainment's Nelvana, one of the largest animation companies in the world, is an original animated daytime series airing on ABC Family. Alicia Silverstone ("Love Labour's Lost," "Clueless"), the lead voice of "Sharon Spitz" and also executive producer of the series, accepted the award. According to the EMA, BRACEFACE was selected based on the fact that the series "influences greater environmental awareness and proactive change by incorporating positive environmental messages in their work."
In accepting the award, Silverstone commented, ""BRACEFACE is very close to me. I wouldn't have become involved in this project if it didn't portray the message of animal rights to kids."
"It is an honour to have our work in BRACEFACE recognized by EMA," stated Michael Hirsh, CEO of Nelvana. "Alicia Silverstone has played a key role in helping to focus BRACEFACE on key environmental issues that are important to kids today." First presented by the Environmental Media Association in 1991, the Environmental Media Awards honor film and television productions that increase public awareness of environmental problems and inspire personal action on these problems. The Awards recognize writers, producers, directors, actors, and others in the entertainment industry who actively express their concern for the environment through their work.
BRACEFACE chronicles the perils of adolescence as the savvy and admired Sharon Spitz negotiates her way through Mary Pickford Junior High. Faced with the usual challenges that come along with middle school, Sharon also finds herself dealing with mysterious mishaps caused by her braces; which turn out to be a catalyst for things much more perplexing than teenage anxiety.
The series, produced by Nelvana, a leading animation company, tackles significant teen issues including shoplifting, sibling rivalry, divorce, puberty, friendships and crushes among others just to name a few. The episode honored by the EMA, "The Meat of the Matter" begins when Sharon takes a part-time job at a meatpacking plant to spend more time with Alden, the boy who epitomizes cool. When her braces reveal an unpleasant truth about the meat business, she decides to quit and become a vegetarian. After joining an animal rights group, Sharon learns that acting on a new value system isn't always easy.
BRACEFACE airs Saturdays at 9:00 AM (ET/PT) on ABC Family and on Teletoon every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT).
The Environmental Media Association is a non-profit 501(c) 3. EMA's mission is to mobilize the entertainment industry in a global effort to educate people about environmental issues and inspire them into action.
