Earthbound Farm celebrates Earth Day's 40th Anniversary |
"Greenman" leads humorous but heartfelt charge for choosing organic and other routine actions that help protect the planet |
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA, CALIFORNIA, Apr. 19 -/E-Wire/-- Honoring Earth Day's 40th Anniversary, Earthbound Farm is giving consumers a range of exciting ways to embrace sustainability and protect natural resources this April. Leading the charge for the nation's largest organic produce company is the superhero Greenman, whose mission is to educate the public about how even small changes in daily routines can help protect the planet. Complementing a brand new series of quirky Greenman videos with a reusable bag giveaway, eco-charity donations, and tips from the company's co-founder and cookbook author Myra Goodman, Earthbound Farm aims to raise the online and offline profile of Earth Day to a new level.
Spreading the message that consumers' choices in the kitchen can help make things better or worse for the environment, Earthbound's video series can be found in the Earth-Bound Kitchen. Rescuing hapless Sue from disasters such as using non-recycled paper towels and eating non-organic lettuce, Greenman arrives comically in her kitchen without the precision of better known superheroes, armed only with 'living green' solutions. Tips from Goodman's upcoming cookbook, The Earthbound Cook: Recipes for Delicious Food and a Healthy Planet can be found in the Kitchen, along with printable tip sheets covering the issues of green cleaning, conserving water, recycling, eating less meat, and choosing organic. A short Earthbound Farm Kitchen quiz reinforces the idea that healthier eating and greener kitchen practices can help protect the health of people and the planet…and is the gateway to winning an attractive reusable grocery tote (made from recycled bottles) -- which has become a coveted Earth Day trophy over the past three years of Earthbound Farm's Earth Day celebrations.
"The issues facing our environment can feel daunting. We love that Greenman takes a comic approach to help teach people of all ages about how decisions they make every day can have powerfully positive impact on the health of this planet," said Goodman, who co-founded Earthbound Farm with her husband Drew 26 years ago. Earthbound Farm is reaching out to fans on Facebook (www.facebook.com/earthboundfarm) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/earthboundfarm) in April to promote its giveaway of 50,000 coveted reusable shopping totes at specific dates and times. Two further initiatives will help consumers give green, and save green:
Ø Earthbound Farm will donate 25¢ from every specially marked package of organic Heirloom Lettuce Leaves sold during April to four eco-charities. Consumers can cast their vote at www.ebfarm.com to decide whether American Forests, the Environmental Working Group, the Natural Resources Defense Council, or the Pesticide Action Network gets the biggest share of the donation.
Ø All 5-ounce clamshell packages of Earthbound Farm Organic Mixed Baby Greens are featuring an on-pack instantly redeemable coupon good for $1.00 off any two Earthbound Farm organic produce items.
"On this 40th anniversary of Earth Day, we hope people understand that choosing organic food is an important means to protect the environment. By using environmentally friendly methods to grow crops without toxic synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic farmers help to protect our air, soil, water and food supply every day of the year," said Goodman.
