Leaders Honored for their Outstanding Contributions to the Design-Build Industry
- Leading industry experts bring vision and sense of urgency to a new era of alternate delivery solutions -
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Nov. 23 -/E-Wire/-- The Water Design-Build Council (WDBC) announced today that Mark Alpert, P.E. and Pete Tunnicliffe P.E., DEE were honored with prestigious achievement awards by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA).

Mark Alpert, P.E., senior vice president-design-build at CH2M HILL and WDBC Board member, has been given the 2009 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award.

For over 35 years, Alpert has been a pioneer in the development of integrated project delivery for water and wastewater projects. Even before the term "design-build" was commonly recognized, Alpert was focusing on cost-effective design and construction, which led to the formalization of design-build and other alternate project delivery methods.

Alpert has directly influenced the successful development and delivery of more than 75 design-build projects for CH2M HILL. Among Alpert's many accomplishments, he has held numerous positions in industry organizations. He has been an active member of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) since 1995 and has served on the Board of the Water Design-Build Council since its inception in 2006.

"It has taken many years to formalize the design-build philosophy," noted Alpert. We are glad that municipal leaders and public works directors are reaping the benefits of design-build. Again and again, projects are being delivered in significantly less time, with excellent results."

Pete Tunnicliffe, P.E., DEE, senior vice president at CDM and president of the Water Design-Build Council, was also honored at the DBIA Awards Ceremony with a Design-Build Distinguished Leadership Award. The award is given to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the advancement of design-build best practices and of design-build as the project delivery method of choice.

With over 35 years of experience in the design-build industry, Tunnicliffe currently heads CDM's design-build project development group. Prior to his current assignment, Tunnicliffe created and led CDM's design-build and construction subsidiary, growing it to one of the ENR magazine's Top 400 Contractors in the U.S. Along with Alpert, Tunnicliffe is a founding member of the Water Design-Build Council.

"Communities across the country are facing severe issues with aging water infrastructure, water quality, and water scarcity," remarked Tunnicliffe. "We believe that in many cases, design-build could be the answer. Not only is it a smart solution to quickly and effectively implement these projects, design-build also boosts local economies by expeditiously providing much-needed job opportunities."
