THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY ANNOUNCES 2008 TWS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS
BETHESDA, MARYLAND, May. 14 -/E-Wire/-- The Wildlife Society (TWS) today released the list of participants who have been chosen to attend the 2008 TWS Leadership Institute. All applicants are early-career wildlife professionals who were selected to participate in a variety of distance learning and hands-on projects, which will culminate in intensive mentoring activities and leadership workshops at the 2008 TWS Annual Conference in Miami, Florida in November.

“It is well known in the profession that nearly 70 percent of our leaders are projected to retire in the next decade,” stated Michael Hutchins, Ph.D., executive director/CEO of TWS. “We established The Leadership Institute in 2006 to address the upcoming shortage because we feel we have a responsibility to prepare our members to meet this pressing need.”

A committee of TWS members and staff select participants based on the applicant’s academic record, demonstrated leadership capability, or potential, and demonstrated level of excellence in their current position, or in a Chapter or Section of The Wildlife Society.

Selected are:

- LeAnne Bonner, Biologist, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission

- Julie Cunningham, Conservation Technician, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks

- Kelly Douglass, Captive Cervid Program Leader, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission

- Allison Fowler, Field Ecologist, The Nature Conservancy, Arkansas

- Angela Fuller, Post-Doctoral Research Associate and Associate Graduate Faculty, University of Maine

- Emily Hamblen, Remote Camera Technician, University of Alberta

- Jon Klimstra, Wildlife Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Patuxent Research Refuge, Maryland

- Mayra Moreno, Natural Resources Manager I, Arizona Department of Transportation

- Rachael Ranft, Blanco River Project Director, The Nature Conservancy, Texas

- Krysten Schuler, Wildlife Ecologist, USGS National Wildlife Health Center, Wisconsin

“As professionals, these future leaders will face some difficult challenges in the years to come,” continued Hutchins. “The Leadership Institute was designed to groom them to face the many and varying conservation and management issues that lie ahead.”

From May through November, the participants will complete a wide variety of exercises, which include reading and interpreting leadership materials, presenting to peer groups, working collaboratively with each other, leading discussions, and developing summary documents regarding professional leadership. During the TWS Annual Conference in Miami, the participants will meet for discussions, serve as mentors for students attending the conference, and attend Council meetings.

“Each year we receive more applications from talented young professionals for The Leadership Institute,” concluded Hutchins. “As in years past, we think the 2008 group will be ready to face the many situations that will arise as wildlife management and conservation becomes more complex and potentially controversial in the future.”
