Dr. Jane Goodall is coming to Chicagoland to celebrate the first anniversary of the Roots and Shoots Great Lakes Regional Office and to laud the community service efforts of Roots and Shoots groups across the Great Lakes region. Attendees at the event will include local dignitaries, the principal of the Richard J. Daley Academy and local Roots and Shoots members from the Chicago area.

Dr. Goodall’s visit is an opportunity for Roots and Shoots groups from across the six-state Great Lakes region to showcase their hard work. In Chicagoland alone, Roots and Shoots members have had a significant impact. Some of the highlights over the past year include:

An animal welfare club started by Las Casas Occupational High School

An Earth Day clean-up at Humbolt Park sponsored by Northside College Preparatory High School

Anti-violence songs created and performed by the Ray of Hope Center for the Arts

Other initiatives of note in the region include formation of the first Roots and Shoots Regional Youth Council in the Great Lakes area, work with homeless youth in Ohio and a partnership with Head Start programs in Michigan.

Since its inception in Tanzania in 1991, the Roots and Shoots program has taken off in small towns and big cities across the globe. There are currently more than 100,000 young people in nearly 100 countries around the world involved in Roots and Shoots. Based on Dr. Goodall’s principles of

knowledge, compassion and action, the youth-driven projects of Roots and Shoots groups focus on the

care of animals, the environment and the human community. More than just an environmental service program, Roots and Shoots members are community leaders that use service-learning projects not only to improve the world around them, but to educate others to create sustainable change.
