Miramichi Camps Lead in Releasing Salmon |
ST. ANDREWS, NEW BRUNSWICK, Dec. 20 -/E-Wire/--
The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) has recognized eight outfitter and private recreational salmon angling camps on the Miramichi River for their outstanding commitment to conservation of wild Atlantic salmon through catch and release. Qualifying for membership in the organization's Live Release Rewards and Recognition Program are Black Rapids Salmon Club, Ledges Inn, Miramichi Inn, Pond's Resort, Upper Oxbow Outdoor Adventures and Wilson's Sporting Club. The private camps that ASF has recognized are Black Brook Salmon Club and Sutter Salmon Club.
To qualify, outfitter camps, which are open to the public, are required to encourage their guests to release not only salmon, but also grilse, promote live release and the purchase of the New Brunswick live release license, and teach the proper live release techniques to their guests. Private camps, which are not generally open to the angling public, are required to release 100 percent of their angled salmon, including grilse.
President of ASF Bill Taylor said, "As the numbers of large salmon that migrate all the way to West Greenland decline, smaller salmon known as grilse that migrate to feeding grounds closer to home, become even more important in seeding the Miramichi River. Until populations rebound, each and every salmon and grilse is important."
In N. B., regulations allow anglers to kill 8 grilse.
Last year the Miramichi River achieved only 85 percent of its minimum spawning targets, and this year, while the final information is not in, returns to October 31 at counting facilities indicate a downturn in runs. At the Southwest Millerton Trapnet, large salmon declined by 45 percent, while grilse were down by 51 percent. The Dungarvon Protection Barrier had 60 percent fewer salmon and 58 percent fewer grilse. The Southwest Juniper Barrier saw 62 percent fewer salmon and 24 percent fewer grilse. The Northwest Protection barrier had the same number of salmon in both years and 23 percent fewer grilse. The Northwest Cassilis Trap net was the only bright spot with 27 percent more grilse and 54 percent more salmon.
"Our recognized camps acknowledge the importance of both grilse and salmon in recovering the Miramichi River run. They provide leadership by making an extra effort to release grilse and salmon carefully and responsibly to ensure they make it to the spawning grounds, " said ASF Regional Director for New Brunswick Patricia Edwards.
ASF rewards qualifying camps with live release flags, acknowledgement plaques, free ASF memberships for guides, and outfitters have the chance to win a page of advertising in the award-winning Atlantic Salmon Journal. All camps are acknowledged by ASF in the Atlantic Salmon Journal, on its newly-launched web site, and at public events.
A total of 29 camps (ten private and 19 outfitting camps) in N.B., Quebec, N.S. and Labrador have been recognized and rewarded. New Brunswick leads the way with a total of 14 camps recognized, six of them on the Restigouche River.
