STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, Dec. 18 -/E-Wire/--
The 2008 World Water Week in Stockholm, taking place August 17-23 2008, released its First Announcement and Call for Abstracts in December. Abstracts must be submitted using an online form at www.worldwaterweek.org before the February 1, 2008 deadline.
The 2008 World Water Week in Stockholm is themed "Progress and Prospects on Water: For a Clean and Healthy World" with special focus placed on sanitation issues. The annual World Water Week in Stockholm, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), promotes the exchange of views and experiences between the scientific, business, policy and civil society communities, thereby advancing the water, sanitation, environment, health, climate adaptation, poverty reduction, human development and related agendas.
"The sanitation focus at the 2008 World Water Week aims to elevate the debate and to share experiences from both the successes and failures in order to learn how to best move forward for progress. It will highlight issues ranging from global response, national policy and community dynamics, to research, implementation and socio-economic approaches," says Ms. Cecilia Martinsen of the World Water Week management team at SIWI.

Keeping the Debate Alive
Many of the events in 2008 will revisit general themes and specific issues and activities that have been initiated in previous World Water Weeks. The aim is to maintain focus on critical water-related issues where sustained debate is essential and where the field is undergoing major change. Continuing general themes for 2008 will include:
Drinking water supply
Ecosystems and biodiversity
Finance, business, economics and the private sector
Governance
Water and climate change
Water resource management
