Green Building Conference Breaks Records, Hosts the World |
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, Sep. 26 -/E-Wire/-- The West Coast Green Conference and Expo today announced facts and figures for its 2007 event, held September 20-22nd at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in downtown San Francisco.
Size and Scope: 10,762 people, including over 300 journalists, registered for last weekend's event, making it the largest and most well documented residential green building conference in history. Registration records show attendees from 47 U.S. states as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, England, Fiji, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Ireland, Luxemburg, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Switzerland, Taiwan and Spain.
"It's far bigger and more hands-on than any green building conference I've yet seen," said Jeremy Faludi of WorldChanging. "It's a sign that green building is going mainstream."
Conference Program: As thousands poured into the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in downtown San Francisco, organizers greeted them with a message woven into every aspect of the conference design: "Live the change." Speakers included San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Sarah Susanka, Steve Wozniak, Ray Anderson, Erin Brockovich, Bob Berkebile, Ed Begley Jr., Ed Mazria, Bill Weihl, Van Jones, Allison Arieff, Raymond Cole, David Eisenberg, Eric Corey Freed, Robyn Griggs-Lawrence, David Johnston, Michelle Kaufmann, Paul Kephart, Hunter Lovins, Peter Pfeiffer, Cameron Sinclair, John Todd, Sim Van der Ryn and hundreds of others.
Living System: Presentations sported a "living system" design, which allowed track hosts to tie key points and meaningful distinctions together from across the spectrum of talks and workshops. Hosts then posted their summaries in the Conversation Cafandeacute a space for discussing new ideas, for participant's to review. Facilitators, graphic recorders and business consultants from The Grove and The Economic Transformations Group helped hundreds of attendees catalyze new initiatives into viable programs and business plans in the Action Hub. Throughout 2008, conference board members will follow and support these new initiatives as they develop.
Attendees were also pampered with a large, comfortable "Nap Room" to unwind in, Google's "Sketchup Room" for drafting plans, a "Government and Policy Salon" hosted by Green Technology Magazine and several other key spaces for groups to form and collaborate on the ideas generated during the show.
mkLotus Showhouse: In Civic Center Plaza, attendees toured the mkLotus, a prefabricated, zero-energy, green-built modular home. Constructed by Xtreme Homes and designed by Michelle Kaufmann, the 700 square foot house sported sustainable materials like fly ash concrete, FSC-certified wood, no-VOC paint, a living roof, LED lighting system, Energy Star appliances, photovoltaic energy system and a rainwater catchment system.
Carbon Footprint: With the average conference producing 100-200 cubic yards of landfill waste in a matter of days, West Coast Green 2006 diverted 96 percent to compost and recycling. While the final waste diversion numbers won't be available for weeks, the event staff is optimistic.
"The conference is determined to recycle 99 percent of everything that is thrown away," said Mike Cohn, one of over 500 volunteers stationed at recycling stations (compost, recyclables, and landfill trash) throughout the conference.
Tradeshow: For Jessica Jensen of Low Impact Living, its all about the vast array of green products offered at the show. "If you are into green homes and eco-friendly living, you will think you died and went to heaven at West Coast Green."
