First Resort In The World To Offer A "Carbon Free Vacation" |
LA TANTE, GRENADA, WEST INDIES, Jul. 24 -/E-Wire/--
The recently opened Paradise Bay Resort and Spa in Grenada, Eastern Caribbean, is the first resort in the world with a utility grade windmill, producing more energy than the resort needs. The windmill, installed in March 2007, is still waiting for the local electricity company to interconnect and take the excess energy. The resort will then thus be better than zero carbon, considering car, bus and truck usage and fuel operated equipment.
To take a leap forward - and set an example - the resort will buy carbon certificates to compensate the CO2 emission for guest's flights, as well as the transport on the islands. Guests do not need to sign in for this or pay extra it is an automatic, externally audited program valid for all guests. The prices of the resort are not increased because of this. Owner James Post: "We expect the extra costs for this Carbon Free Vacation approach will be compensated by higher guest loyalty".
The implementation date depends greatly on the interconnection date to the electricity network, but will definitely be before the end of 2007. Paradise Bay already made arrangements to allow standalone operation as early as November 2007 in case the electricity company Grenlec (parent: WRB Enterprises Inc.,Tampa/FL) does not connect on agreed conditions of October 2006.

Total Sustainability Approach
The definition is: "Tourism that is economically, socio-culturally and environmentally sustainable"
To reach that goal, Paradise Bay hires and buys local as much as possible, supports cultural and social projects. A typical example of the social responsibility was the formation of an aid organization after hurricane Ivan in September 2004, where the resort provided a wide area with food, water, vitamins, medicines, first aid, tools and Christmas present (report available). The Carbon Free Vacation more than complements these to truthfully claim Total Sustainability. The restaurants use organic vegetables and meat, while the organic guest amenities are in ECO friendly containers.

The beach massage gazebo (sea water flowing under the guest), the idyllic Frangipani Beach Bar and Grill, dancing at the beach set the tone for this resort, where guests are one with nature and get away from it all.
