Nau Demonstrates Leadership on Sustainability by Purchasing Carbon Offsets and Green Tags |
PORTLAND, OREGON, Jun. 25 -/E-Wire/--
Innovative lifestyle and technical outdoor clothing company Nau (pronounced "now") (www.nau.com) today announced partnerships with The Climate Trust and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) that will reduce Nau's carbon footprint in several parts of its business. Nau will purchase carbon offsets from The Climate Trust and Green Tags (also known as renewable energy certificates) from BEF. These actions are part of Nau's sustainability strategy, which is core to the company's mission.
The carbon offsets from The Climate Trust will be applied to carbon dioxide emissions associated with the shipment of products from factories to distribution centers, and from the distribution centers to Nau's retail "Webfront" stores and to customers' homes. Offsets will also be applied to employees' corporate air travel. Nau selected The Climate Trust because of the high quality standards the Climate Trust applies to its projects. The Climate Trust has a diversity of projects in its portfolio, including carbon sequestration in forests, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and transportation efficiency. Projects in the Northwest include a partnership with the Deschutes Resources Conservancy to reforest riparian areas with native trees in the Deschutes River Basin.
The Green Tags from new wind and solar power being purchased from BEF will cover the electric power used to operate Nau's retail stores and its office in Portland, Oregon. Currently, Nau has four stores located in Portland, Chicago, Boulder and Bellevue, WA. and anticipates opening additional stores throughout the United States. BEF's Green Tags are from 100% Green-e certified sources. Nau chose to purchase Green Tags from BEF because of the Foundation's commitment to develop additional new community-scale renewable energy projects and long-term watershed restoration with the revenues generated from the sale of Green Tags.
"Nau is thrilled to partner with The Climate Trust and BEF. Our efforts to become a sustainable company extend beyond our efforts to use environmentally responsible materials, such as recycled polyester and organically grown cotton to include the entire supply chain. Our partnerships with The Climate Trust and BEF move us in that direction," said Eric Brody, Sustainability Manager at Nau. "Nau recognizes that carbon offsets and renewable energy Green Tags are one part of a comprehensive energy and climate strategy."
Nau is also engaging with its logistics providers to track the magnitude of the greenhouse gas emissions that result from shipping products and is making continual improvements in the supply chain to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use. The company is also encouraging customers at its stores to use free shipping to deliver the products directly to their homes in minimized packaging from Nau's distribution center - this enables Nau to have smaller stores and rely on more energy efficient distribution centers. Nau's headquarters is located in a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building and they are pursuing LEED certification for some of their store locations.
"We are very pleased that such an innovative and pioneering company has chosen to purchase carbon offsets produced from our projects, and we applaud Nau for taking several other steps to minimize its carbon footprint, including purchasing Green Tags," said Craig Diamond, Director of Strategy and Operations at the Climate Trust.
"Nau's Green Tag purchase positions the company among industry leaders actively utilizing sustainable business practices including both efficiency and offsets," said Patrick Nye, Director of Sales from BEF. "Nau's purchase of Green Tags is key to addressing one of the root sources of greenhouse gas emissions - our nation's electricity system. Shifting energy production from fossil fuels to renewables prevents further carbon dioxide pollution from occurring in the first place."
