2006 Symposium on Western Fuels Announced |
Conference Set for October 24–26, 2006, in Denver, Colorado |
GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA, Sep. 6 -/E-Wire/--
The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) will hold the 20th Symposium on Western Fuels: International Conference on Lignite, Brown, and Subbituminous Coals October 24–26, 2006, at the Marriott Denver Tech Center, in Denver, Colorado.
The biannual event is sponsored by the EERC, the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory, and Electric Power Research Institute, Inc.
"Coal is our ace in the hole with respect to energy independence and energy security in this country," said EERC Director Gerald Groenewold. "The EERC is world-renowned for its leadership in coal research. Our various Centers of Excellence, working in partnership with the private sector and federal agencies, are developing and commercializing very clean, more efficient uses for this indigenous resource."
The United States has enough coal to last hundreds of years. Western coals offer the lowest fuel cost for fossil-based electric generation. The Energy Information Agency projects that by the year 2030, western coal costs on a tonnage basis will be less than half of those for eastern coals, and the production rates will roughly double. In addition to the opportunities in electric power generation, there are ample growth opportunities for western coals including synthetic fuel production and the production of hydrogen for the emerging hydrogen economy.
This symposium offers a highly focused forum through which industry, government, and research organizations can share up-to-date information on the role of lignite, brown, and subbituminous coals in meeting future energy demands. The conference will highlight several topics including advanced power systems, environmental issues, fuel properties and upgrading, energy and water, and carbon sequestration.
More than 70 world-renowned presenters have been assembled for the event, which is expected to draw more than 400 U.S. and international attendees. The symposium will feature an expanded exhibit show and poster session showcasing industry leaders from around the nation.
Attendees from 29 states and five countries attended the 19th Western Fuels Symposium in October 2004. The majority of the attendees represented industry and research organizations. Other groups represented included coal suppliers, utilities, government, and development groups.
Advanced booth sale for the Symposium on Western Fuels is still available on the Western Fuels Web site. Booth space is limited and will fill up fast. To reserve a prime location, organizations should register now by visiting the Web site at www.undeerc.org/wfs.
General registration is also available online. Participants can get full conference access for $100 off the later registration rate if registrations are received before October 3, 2006.
