William McDonough Cited by Esquire as 'Big Thinker of the Year - Designer of the Better World'
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Nov. 16 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/-- The December 2005 "America's Best & Brightest" issue of Esquire -- coming soon to news stands -- cites McDonough's achievements in "reinventing almost everything" for the better. Tyler Cabot, Esquire editor and author of the profile, writes, "There was a time when architect William McDonough was best known for his buildings. Then he decided to move on to bigger and better things. Like re-designing the whole world."

A striking concept drawing for Liuzhou, China, one of William McDonough + Partners' seven recent projects in China, headlines the two-page article. Four other designs are detailed, including the new, highly energy-efficient Frito-Lay Jim Rich Service Center near Rochester, New York; a high-tech eco-intelligent Model U concept car for Ford Motor Company; a 99-percent recyclable Herman Miller chair; and McDonough's concept plan for a new ecologically progressive toilet.

Esquire (pages 220-221) notes McDonough's history as "green dean" of the University of Virginia's School of Architecture, numerous successful designs for Fortune 500 CEO's, and the "cradle to cradle" philosophy he has laid out for a new "industrial revolution." "His guiding tenet: Like nature, industrial design should be self-renewing; every product should not only be manufactured using nontoxic ingredients and green energy sources but also be capable of being broken down into its basic biological and technical elements so it can be reborn and reused at the end of its life span, whether in factories or compost heaps... It's a world in which no material is ever wasted."
