Second Edition of Influential "HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design" is Published by John Wiley & Sons
Book identifies tangible, "real-world" opportunities for sustainable design, with a focus on the design process, issues specific to different building types, and long-term building performance.
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, Nov. 9 -/E-Wire/-- "The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design," one of the most influential real-world guides for improving building performance, health, productivity and long-term value through sustainable design, has been revised and expanded. The newly published second edition is reorganized to provide step-by-step guidance throughout the design process, while highlighting key issues for different building types.

HOK Guidebook.jpg Co-authored by HOK design professionals Sandra F. Mendler, AIA, LEED® AP; William Odell, AIA, LEED® AP; and Mary Ann Lazarus, AIA, LEED® AP, with a new foreword by environmental visionary Paul Hawken, the 480-page second edition serves as a practical reference guide for integrated, sustainable, high-performance design. Published by John Wiley & Sons, the book is available at bookstores, online retailers and directly from the publisher.
"The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design, Second Edition" documents HOK's commitment over the past 12 years to transform the practice of architecture by advancing the firm's projects and the entire facility planning and design profession toward sustainable design.

Structured around 10 steps of integrated design, the book offers practical, easily transferable information on project planning, team building, budgeting, design, construction and operations. It is structured to support use of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System for both visioning and goal setting, as well as for design optimization. By cross-referencing LEED and HOK's 10-step design process, design professionals can use the book as a roadmap for working toward LEED certification or simply for improving their projects.

Also featured in the book are: -- 18 detailed planning and design case studies of projects worldwide. -- post occupancy evaluations of 10 completed sustainable facilities. -- concise, hands-on checklists of issues to consider at each stage of the design process, as well as focused descriptions of key sustainable strategies. This includes an extensive discussion of the energy modeling process and guidelines for sustainable material selection.

"Because HOK designs almost $5 billion in new construction and renovation projects each year, we have a unique opportunity to improve the built environment," says HOK Sustainable Design Principal and Co-Author Sandy Mendler. "By sharing our knowledge and lessons learned, we hope to help architects, engineers, planners, interior designers and landscape architects all over the world integrate sustainable design strategies into their own work. The book provides a clear roadmap for the integrated multidisciplinary design process that will help teams develop 'green' projects within conventional constraints of budget, schedule and market demand."

John Wiley & Sons published the first edition of "The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design" in 2000 as the most comprehensive real-world design tool for sustainable design. "This book has a great deal to offer," wrote Environmental Building News. "No serious designer of commercial buildings should be without it." Though originally intended for design professionals, the first edition attracted a broad range of readers including facility managers, construction professionals, educators and students and environmentalists.

HOK is a global architectural firm that specializes in planning, design and delivery solutions for buildings and communities.
