The Climate Trust Fights Global Warming:
Truckers Get a Cleaner, Healthier, and Quiet Night's Rest |
|
PORTLAND, OREGON, Oct. 4 -/E-Wire/-- The Climate Trust has awarded funding to Shurepower, LLC to support the launch of a truck stop electrification network at truck stops in Oregon and Washington. The project will clean the air, reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, save truckers money, and help stop global warming.

Each night, thousands of truckers idle their diesel engines during government mandated rest periods to power heating, air conditioning, and appliances for their sleeper cabs. Unfortunately, engines running at idling speed also cause undue wear on machinery, emit harmful local and global air pollutants, and increase noise levels for drivers and neighboring communities.

"Shurepower is a cheaper, cleaner, quieter and healthier alternative to engine idling at truck stops," said Jeff Kim, Vice President of Shurepower, LLC. "It made good economic sense for drivers to plug in even before the recent escalation in diesel fuel prices. Drivers can save over two dollars per hour by using our services."

The Shurepower technology provides on-site electrical outlets for truckers at locations where they stop for required rest periods, typically over-night. By "shutting-down-and-plugging-in", truck drivers use cheaper and cleaner power from the electric grid to run their accessories and cab appliances. This project is estimated to displace nearly 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), 1,400 tons of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), 40 tons of particulate matter (PM), and 10 million gallons of diesel fuel.

"The Climate Trust continues its national leadership in mitigating the impacts of global warming," said Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski, who expressed appreciation to The Climate Trust for helping to fund a key element of the West Coast Governor's Global Warming Initiative. "In this project, the private and public sectors in Oregon and elsewhere are coming together to counteract climate change, improve the quality of the air that we breathe, and reduce the impacts of rising fuel costs on business."

The Climate Trust's purchase of carbon dioxide offsets provides the cornerstone funding required to implement this project. Additional funding and/or participation are provided by Shurepower, LLC, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Oregon Governor's Oregon Solutions team, Oregon State University, Washington Department of Ecology, the Oregon Department of Energy, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
