New Partnerships Punctuate Dell's Commitment to Clean Air |
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Austin Energy Among Dell's Public-Private Partnerships for Air Quality |
ROUND ROCK, TEXAS, Apr. 22 -/E-Wire/Business Wire/--
As ozone action season gets underway, Dell (Nasdaq:DELL) is doing its share to help clean Central Texas air.
The company has joined the Clean Air Partners, a program to reduce ozone emissions and improve air quality; committed to purchasing at least 10 percent of its electricity requirements supplied by Austin Energy through the GreenChoice program for renewable energy; and joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership, a program to increase energy efficiency while reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Dell also announced its sponsorship of the CLEAN AIR Force of Central Texas's Ozone Action Awareness initiative. The grant from Dell will help the organization educate the general public on the hazards of ground-level ozone and provide helpful emissions minimizing tips through community events and public service announcements.
"Dell believes that the most effective ways to promote air quality and emissions reduction are those that incorporate shared responsibility and public-private partnerships," Pat Nathan, Dell's Sustainable Business Director, said. "The environment is an area where Dell has potential for positive impact, not only with our product features but also in our own operations."
Dell's participation in the Clean Air Partners program includes a pledge to reduce vehicle and other ozone-forming emissions by 10 percent in the next three years, and report the company's progress twice a year. The voluntary program was developed by the CLEAN AIR Force of Central Texas to develop innovative local air quality improvement measures.
Dell's commitment to purchase energy from renewable sources through Austin Energy's GreenChoice program will contribute to its emissions reduction targets. By using energy from renewable sources, less electricity is produced from power plants using natural gas or coal.
As part of the EPA's voluntary SmartWay program, Dell committed to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions level of its freight operations. This reduction is made possible in part by increasing the percentage of freight shipped by SmartWay Transport Partnership carriers -- companies with programs to minimize the emissions of their fleets.
"Through these programs, Dell is making an investment in the quality of life of our employees, customers, suppliers and shareholders," Kip Thompson, Dell's vice president of Global Facilities, said. "We are proud to be a purchaser of renewable energy from GreenChoice and are looking forward to working with SmartWay Transport and Clean Air Partners to reduce air pollution and energy consumption."
Dell's air quality partnerships are one element of the company's four-part Total Product Life Cycle approach to sound environmental practices. Air quality improvement is integral to phase two, manufacturing and operations. The other phases are product concept and design, customer ownership experience, and equipment end-of-life strategies.
