Metals Remediation Compound (MRC™) from Regenesis Seeks to Revolutionize Dissolved Metals Cleanup
Injectable, dual-purpose product removes dissolved metals from groundwater while providing a substrate for biodegradation of chlorinated compounds
SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, Oct. 21 -/E-Wire/-- Regenesis, the leading developer of products to accelerate the natural attenuation of groundwater contaminants, announces the introduction of Metals Remediation Compound (MRC™), a completely new, injectable product designed to treat a wide range of dissolved metals and chlorinated solvents in-situ, removing them from groundwater safely, quickly, effectively, and at a low cost.

Dissolved metals such as chromium, cadmium, nickel, mercury, copper, arsenic, and lead are found in soil and groundwater at thousands of sites in the U.S. and worldwide due to spills and leaks from steel plants, plating shops, and other industrial facilities; seepage from industrial waste lagoons; and leaching from landfills, sewage sludge, mine tailings and other sources.

Many current metals remediation approaches require engineered system design, construction, operations, and maintenance to extract the contaminated media, treat it, and to dispose of any generated hazardous wastes. These intensive processes add significant costs and complications to the entire process.

Regenesis has developed and is promoting its new, low-cost, injectable product designed to render dissolved metals harmless through the manipulation of geochemical processes, such as precipitation, dissolution, oxidation/reduction, and complexation, which control the state and mobility of metals in an aquifer. MRC is formulated to effectively remove metals from groundwater by directly altering geochemical processes.

MRC is a non-toxic, slow-release formulation that begins working upon injection into groundwater. The active ingredient is an environmentally benign organosulfur ester compound, which is slowly released when MRC is hydrated and subjected to microbial biodegradation. Contact between the organosulfur compound and metal ions then initiates an irreversible reaction ("complexation") that produces a metal-organosulfur complex. This complex sorbs strongly to soil particles, effectively immobilizing/removing the target metals from the groundwater environment. After the organic portion of the complex is biodegraded, a metal sulfide precipitate remains fixed to the soil.

MRC also contains a polylactate ester which acts as an electron donor and carbon source for naturally-occurring bacteria to create optimal conditions for metals immobilization, while simultaneously providing a substrate for the biodegradation of chlorinated compounds such as tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE). This means sites contaminated with both metals and chlorinated compounds (mixed plumes) can be treated effectively with a single product, MRC, thus eliminating the need and cost for separate processes to treat both metals and chlorinated solvents.

About Regenesis:

Incorporated in 1994, Regenesis is the world's leading developer and distributor of products used to accelerate bioremediation. Regenesis's patented products include Oxygen Release Compound (ORC®), for remediation of aerobically degradable hydrocarbons; Hydrogen Release Compound (HRC®), for treatment of anaerobically degradable compounds; Hydrogen Release Compound, Extended Release Formula (HRC-X™), for long-term treatment of residual source areas and DNAPLs; and Bio-Dechlor Inoculum™, for treatment of dichloroethenes (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC) at recalcitrant sites. MRC™ is one of the company's newest offerings, for injectable, low-cost, in-situ groundwater treatment.
