Asahi Glass Foundation Publishes Better Future for the Planet Vol. II |
|
TOKYO, JAPAN, Aug. 5 -/E-Wire/--
Tokyo The Asahi Glass Foundation has published the Better Future for the Planet Earth Vol. II to commemorate the Blue Planet Prize's 10th anniversary in Autumn 2001. This book compiles the commemorative lectures of the recipients of the sixth to 10th Blue Planet Prizes as well as newly written essays and lists of publications by these authors. It also contains the synopsis of the Questionnaire on Environmental Problems and the Survival of Humankind that the Foundation has administered since 1992.

The Blue Planet Prize, which was established in 1992, is awarded annually to two individuals or organizations whose pioneering achievements represent contributions to solving such environmental problems as global warming, acid rain, ozone layer depletion, ecosystem destruction in tropical rainforests, species extinction and desertification. The winners are presented with a certificate of merit, a commemorative trophy and a supplementary prize of 50 million yen. The recipients of the sixth to 10th Blue Planet Prizes are Dr. James E. Lovelock and Conservation International (1997,) Professor Mikhail I. Budyko and Mr. David R. Brower (1998,) Dr. Paul R. Ehrlich and Professor Qu Geping (1999,) Dr. Theo Colborn and Dr. Karl-Henrik Robet (2000) and Lord (Robert) May of Oxford and Dr. Norman Myers (2001).

The synopsis of the environmental survey compiles the results of 10 years of questionnaires to government and private-sector organizations around the world from nearly 190 countries. The survey documents trends over a 10-year period for topics such as Environmental Doomsday Clock, Agenda 21 and Lifestyle Alteration. In addition, it provides information on various topics such COP, Environmental Taxes, Environmental Education, Water Problems, Endocrine Disruptors as year-topic. The aggregate number of the respondents since 1992 amounts to 6200.

This book is the sequel to the Better Future for the Planet Earth Volume I published in 1997, which contained the works of the recipients of the first five Prizes. The Foundation presents the book to 100 persons on a first-come- first-served basis.
