FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pioneering work in Mexico Ecotourism wins Marlene Ehrenberg 2002 Colibri Award
With "Hummingbird" award, Planeta.com and Canyon Travel recognize individual achievement in ecotourism
OAXACA, MEXICO, Jun. 5 -/E-Wire/-- For many achievements, ecotourism pioneer Marlene Ehrenberg receives the Second Annual Colibri Award, given by Planeta.com, the website for Eco Travels around the Globe. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize, underwritten by Canyon Travel, a prominent Copper Canyon ecotourism operator. The Colibri Award recognizes individual achievement at the vanguard of environmental travel, and will be presented today, World Environmental Day.

"The Colibri Award pays homage to those whose work celebrates the intersection of conservation ethics and responsible tourism," said Planeta.com Author and Webhost Ron Mader. See http://www.planeta.com/colibri.html for more information.

For more than 30 years, Mexican-born Ehrenberg has worked in both the conservation and tourism industries. She organizes specialized tours and offers adventures in nature, art and culture. She has protected endangered species and promoted responsible tourism, and is an original founder of Amtave, Mexico's national association for ecotourism and adventure tourism. Today she focuses on initiatives that showcase the network between tourism and conservation. Visit http://marlene366.tripod.com for more information about Marlene Ehrenberg.

Almost ten years ago, Ehrenberg began working on the water-saving plan Mariposa de Agua ("Water Butterfly"), which enables hotels of all sizes and ratings, including Ecoparaiso Xixim in Yucatan, to reduce water consumption, as well as reuse and recycle their water without affecting their standards. The program gives hotel guests the option to reuse their bath and bedroom linens during their stay. "If adopted nationally, millions of dollars could be saved, along with tons of detergent, electric energy and thousands of gallons of water; plus savings on equipment wear and tear," said Ehrenberg.

Planeta.com believes individuals like Ehrenberg have propelled ecotourism into the public discourse. Given Latin America's rich biodiversity, there is economic potential through ecotourism that could exceed logging and mining industries, and mass-tourism beach resort business. Planeta.com developed the first website focused on ecotourism and features a content-rich 10,000 virtual library. For information, visit www.planeta.com or call (52-951) 513-4714. Canyon Travel, underwriters of the $1,000 Colibri Award cash prize, is the only Copper Canyon operator with private eco-lodges and naturalist-trained resident guides.
