HERE Cites Food Safety Record and Poor Employee Relations as Obstacles to Further Growth for Flying Food Group
British Airways Awards Contract To Troubled Airline Catering Firm
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Apr. 23 -/E-Wire/-- According to Momberger Aviation Catering News (3/10/02), British Airways, at Newark Airport, has awarded a three-year catering contract to Flying Food Group, an airline catering firm beset by numerous problems.

The company is currently facing a complaint issued by the National Labor Relations Board for unfair labor practice charges and has a number of racial discrimination allegations pending against it with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

"It's unfortunate that British Airways is rewarding Flying Food Group and their race-to-the-bottom management style,' said Jason Ortiz, a research analyst with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union (HEREIU). "Ultimately Flying Food Group's low-road approach to employee relations and food safety will be a detriment to their plans for further growth. We often find that companies that mistreat their workers also mistreat their customers.'

Flying Food Group has also been cited with non-compliance citations by the USDA-Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS), at their food preparation facilities in Chicago, New York, Miami, Orlando and Newark, New Jersey.

"I'm frankly surprised and disappointed that British Airways would choose to do business with a company like Flying Food,' said Anita Ratnam, a British Airways frequent flier, who flies out of Newark Airport. "I sure hope the stuff I've heard about their food safety record doesn't result in a turbulent tummy the next time I fly from Newark.'

Flying Food Group is a private company based in Chicago, with in-flight kitchens at airports in Chicago (O'Hare and Midway), New York (JFK), Newark, Miami, Orlando, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Shanghai, China. Flying Food's facilities in Miami, Chicago (O'Hare), San Francisco and Seattle are joint ventures with Servair, an Air France subsidiary and one of the largest in-flight global catering companies.
